Feeling lost? How to reconnect with a sense of purpose

Understanding what gives you a sense of meaning and purpose in life is crucial to your wellbeing. In fact, research shows that being connected to a sense of purpose actually lengthens your life.

Of course, we all go through times where we feel a bit lost or directionless.

Sometimes, it’s when we get caught up in the busyness of life and then in a quiet moment pause to ask ourselves what is all this FOR? Where am I going? Why am I doing the things I do? Am I still committed to this path that I’m on?

Sometimes, it’s external, unpredictable events in life that pull the rug out from under you and cause you to disconnect from any sense that life has meaning or that anything makes sense.

A researcher named Michael Steger has spent his career studying what makes life meaningful and developed a cool framework that I think can be really helpful for making an intangible concept like ‘meaning’ into something you can examine and evaluate in your own life, as a way of diagnosing the problem if you’re feeling a bit lost.

And even if you’re not feeling lost, it can also be a useful framework for considering how you might reconnect or deepen your sense of meaning in life, re-align your priorities with your values, and find ways to cultivate a greater sense of purpose.
